OS Experience

My Conclusions on Linux

I tried Linux as a daily driver for around 2-3 months on my old laptop. This is my honest review based on real usage for creative work.

OS tested: Linux Mint, EndeavourOS Desktop: GNOME + Wayland Duration: 2-3 months
Type: Personal Experience

Why did I decided to try it out?

Well , My windows was lagging a bit. because of course. I run some CAD , Adobe , Blender n stuff which requires high processing (Compared to my laptop). So I just decided to try out Linux. To see How good is it. :)

I made few tiny mistakes, including wiping out accidentally 150 GB of projects from my partition. It was a pretty lovely day.

Linux Out of Box?

Initially , I used Mint. But then i decided to go with Endeavour OS on GNOME. Thing's i loved about Linux is, Once you start to use CLI , Everything feels better in CLI. You can have a HELL of customization on Linux compared to Windows. You're PC Actually requires few're processing power to run bunch of apps simultaneously without any lag.

My Setup

My setup is uhh.. just an old laptop. something like 8 year old (acc to the date I posted this blog).

  • i5 - 7th Gen U
  • 16 Gb RAM
  • 940MX Nvidia GPU
  • 1.5 TB Storage (1TB HDD ,Crucial 500GB NVMe)

I was running Arch Based , Endeavour OS running on GNOME Environment with Wayland Windowing system. The setup is lovely pretty much. You're PC will have peak efficiency , while having smooth experience despite having dozens of Extensions. Also set up Catpuccin according to my taste, I went with Mocha with Sky as accent. I've pretty much setup the same theme for almost all the apps I use. Like

  • Zen
  • VSCode
  • Spotify
  • Obsidian
  • OBS
  • Terminal (and all the Env GUI's).

Honestly , Everything was going smooth. Tho, I got restrictions on lot of stuff like Cracked Apps. Its still manageable. I used it for around, 2-3 Months Roughly. And Here are my Honest Reviews

Should you switch to linux?

If you got ABSOLUTLY NO PURPOSE IN LIFE , like NO CREATIVE HOBBIES , NO GAMING , HIGH END PC. Then Linux is Best for you :)

If you know me, I got a minimal PC setup. And I love to explore A LOT of Hobbies. So, This thing isn't build for such users. OFCOURSE , Unless you spent hours on some stupid incompatible drivers and spending more time fixing rather than doing something actual with your Creative Hobbies.

I know you might question me, Then Why Didn't you went with MINT? because I tried it. It still lack several apps on windows.

Linux is definitely for those who can afford time repairing stuff for an APP rather than spending actual progress on Learning. I can't complain, Because Linux is Opensource. And would have it's own PRO's and CON's. And it is for Privacy Concerned people, Because this is TOO SECURE for much of my apps to run. We gotta setup several stuff to Overcome this issue.

Like , ActivityWatch, An opensource App tracker. I Definitely recommend it to record you're app spent time, All data stored Locally within your PC. So, I had A lot of trouble setting this on Linux while it took barely 5 minutes to setup same thing on Windows.

Would I switch back to linux?

Yes! , Only if it starts to support Most of the Windows apps without hectic procedures and once everything is stable. and also runs all the windows games smoothly on low end platforms. Till that time. I will just lock in on windows.

We know everyone got their own opinions. For my hobbies, Linux ain't my match. You know how much hours I spent on linux installation and stuff. So yeah. I would prefer windows as my Creative and Stable OS , and choose Linux as my secondary Non Distracting OS. which is pretty much empty.
